I recently had to replace my hard drive on my ASUS notebook after it crashed. I found my product key, checked with a microsoft consultant that it was valid, and that all I needed was to get a recovery disk from ASUS as it was an OEM copy and retail installation media would not work.

All in all, no problem. They tell me that because the product key is imbedded on the motherboard, that I will be unable to install Windows since I don't know what the product key is.

Except that I do. They told me that legally, they are not allowed to give me a recovery disk - that Microsoft will not allow them to do so. That only they are legally allowed to install Windows on my laptop, and give me a quote as to how much it will cost for me to do.
